Valedictorian & Salutatorian Selection

Riverdale High School will honor outstanding scholars in each graduating year in five categories:

  1. Valedictory Scholars
  2. Salutatory Scholars
  3. 4.0 GPA
  4. National Honor Society Scholars
  5. Service Learning Hours Recognition

Valedictory Scholars:

  • Valedictory Scholars comprise the highest clearly discernible grouping based on GPA distribution as identified annually by the staff Graduation Committee.
  • If no graduating students meet these criteria, there will be no Valedictory Scholars.
  • Transfer students must attend RHS for their senior year in order to be considered for Valedictorian candidacy.
  • Valedictory Scholars must meet these minimum standards:
    1. Eligibility for Riverdale Diploma
    2. Earn at least 28 credits by graduation
    3. Must attend RHS senior year and take 2.5 letter-graded credits each trimester. (Teacher’s Assistant is not considered a letter-graded credit in this case.)
    4. Have no “NG” (no grade), “NP” (no pass) or “I” (incomplete) on transcript
    5. Demonstrate proficiency in all Essential Skills through OAKS, Smarter Balanced, SAT or ACT testing
    6. Earn a minimum of 10 credits of “H” (Honors) credits
    7. The number of A+ grades and number of Honors courses are a deciding factor for those with a 4.0 GPA

Salutatory Scholars:

  • Salutatory Scholars will form the second highest clearly discernible group based on GPA distribution as identified annually by the staff Graduation Committee.
  • If no graduating students meet these criteria, there will be no Salutatory Scholars.
  • Transfer students must attend RHS for one year (senior year) in order to be considered Salutatorian candidacy.
  • Salutatory Scholars will form the second-ranking group providing they meet the following minimum standards:
    1. Eligibility for the Riverdale Diploma
    2. Earn at least 28 credits by graduation
    3. Must attend RHS senior year and take 2.5 letter-graded credits each trimester. (Teacher’s Assistant is not considered a letter graded credit in this case.)
